Esha Kumar

I have celiac disease and have been gluten-free since January 2018. See the 36 reviews I’ve shared on the Spokin App and follow me @glutenfreebasicb. The best part about being a Spokin Ambassador is that I can spread awareness for safe gluten-free foods and restaurants. I want to make people feel like they can live a normal life with celiac disease and Spokin makes that possible.

Always in my grocery cart: Trader Joe’s 0% fat Greek yogurt in the vanilla bean and coconut flavors—high protein, great flavor, and gluten-free! Canyon Bakehouse Heritage Style Whole Grain Bread, too—it’s the closest thing to real sandwich bread I’ve had, it toasts SO well, and it’s perfect for sandwiches.

Favorite restaurant: Summer House Santa Monica in Lincoln Park, Chicago. The vibes are immaculate, and they take such great care of people with celiac disease. Everything is prepared separately if you indicate celiac (or an allergy), their gluten-free bread is amazing, YES you can eat their French fries, and they make gigantic gluten-free cookies that are heavenly!

Favorite bakery: Defloured in Andersonville, Chicago. I can’t live without them. Anything and everything they make is out of this world. My dream would be to somehow collaborate with them and create a unique gluten-free baked good. The staff is SO nice. I’m obsessed!

Most recent trip: I recently went to New York City and had the best gluten-free and vegan meal at Etérea in the East Village. It’s a tequila and mezcal bar with amazing Mexican food. My only regret is that I couldn’t try everything on the menu because I got so full! The entire place is gluten-free and vegan, though they do serve beer, so just pay attention to the cocktail you order. My non-gluten-free husband loved the food so much.

The next trip you’re planning: Greece! Our friends are celebrating their belated wedding (thanks COVID), in Crete, and I’m so excited to see what Greece has to offer for gluten-free foods. I’m most excited to go wine tasting in Santorini and basically live off of feta and olives.

Favorite review shared on Spokin: My favorite review is probably Noglu in New York City. It’s such a cute French bakery that’s 100% gluten-free. It made me feel like I was back in Paris, and honestly, I never thought I’d be able to eat a legitimately delicious French pastry again.

Always on the hunt for: Gluten-free bakeries or dessert spots, wherever I go. I don’t have any other food restrictions so going out to eat is usually not an issue, but when dessert arrives I’m not able to eat most foods (or sweet foods during breakfast). Whenever I travel I like to make it a point to visit a gluten-free bakery as soon as I land just so that I can pick up a couple of things to eat throughout my stay.

Recently saved on Spokin: Chaia Chinatown in Washington D.C., Partake’s pizza crust, and Ghostfish Brewing Co. in Seattle, Washington.

Favorite Spokin app find: Ghostfish Brewing Company Restaurant and Taproom! I had no idea a full gluten-free pub/brewery existed until hearing about Ghostfish!

Dream find on the Spokin app: Gluten-free bakeries in Greece.

Brand or place that is on your wishlist to become Spokin Verified: Modern Bread and Bagel!

The best thing you ever ate: Pizza from Propaganda Pizza in Dowagiac, Michigan. It’s a 100% gluten-free pizza shop 75 miles from Chicago, and fairly close to Lake Michigan. It’s kind of on my way home to my parents’ house in Michigan. Truly a hidden gem. This needs to get on the celiac map!

Sweet or Savory: Sweet!
