Allergy-Friendly Campus Guide: Washington University

Untitled design 1

I was in contact with the registered dietitians (Rebecca and Susan) at Washington University before coming to campus, and they were really helpful. On my move-in day, I attended a couple of food allergy sessions, toured the kitchen, and met the executive chef. I learned that the chefs are FARE-trained, and they seem to be really aware of allergies. There is a top-8 free station (will become top-9 free next year). There are separate areas for preparation, and everything is clearly marked. Overall, my dining experience at WashU has been really good, and the dietitians are very interested in my well-being and safety, which I appreciate!

The Bear’s Den

The Top 8 Friendly station is a great option because food is made in a dedicated area. There’s always a meat option and a vegan option which I appreciate! The meals are pretty repetitive, and they’re the same for lunch and dinner, but I know they are safe, and I appreciate that a lot.

Paws & Go Market

This is the on-campus convenience store for WashU, and it has several allergy-friendly products like Enjoy Life chips/cookies, 88 Acres seed butters, Banza gluten-free pasta, and dairy-free milks and ice cream! There is also fresh fruit, boxed cereal, gluten-free pasta, and more.

Danforth University Center

This is one of the main dining halls on WashU’s campus. It has a Top 8 Friendly station, which always features a vegan option and contains none of the top 8 allergens so I don’t have to worry about cross-contamination. One of the other stations, Cafe Bergson, has five Jamba Juice smoothie options that are all plant-based so I don’t have to worry about how well the blenders have been washed.
