Susie Hultquist

Susie Hultquist is the Founder & CEO of Spokin. If there’s one thing she knows, it’s that managing food allergies requires significant time and effort. At the age of three, Susie’s oldest daughter was diagnosed with life-threatening food allergies. Years later, after spending hours researching what (if any) Girl Scout cookies were safe for her family, the impact of this lifelong condition really sank in. Realizing that existing solutions are fragmented and over-generalized, Susie created Spokin—a trusted, solution-based resource providing a combination of content, community, and tools all with the common goal to make it easier, faster, and safer to manage food allergies.

A longtime and well-respected advocate in the food allergy awareness space, Susie was recently featured in “The Peanut Problem” episode of the six-part Netflix documentary series, Rotten. She also co-founded a very successful fundraising and awareness event that raised $1.4MM and led to the establishment of Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) Chicago in 2008.

Prior to creating Spokin, Susie was a professional investor for close to 20 years who studied business models and platforms built for efficiency. Most recently, she was a Portfolio Manager at Columbia Wanger Asset Management where she invested in public equities. At its peak, Susie managed a portfolio of Small and Mid-Cap Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Internet stocks worth $2B, and co-managed a $400M fund. Susie holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Illinois and earned an MBA from The University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. Susie lives in Chicago with her husband and daughters Natalie, Ella, and Gray.

A Letter From Our Founder

Welcome to Spokin, your new destination for all things food allergies. If there’s one thing I know, it’s that managing food allergies requires effort and time. I also know that connecting with others who have “been there” has been invaluable in helping me navigate food allergies for my daughter. Finding that experienced person and their great advice isn’t as easy as it should be and like everything else in my life, I want a faster, easier, better way to get what I need.

Our mission is to build the ultimate food allergy resource. A go-to spot to provide just what you need, when you need it, regardless of your experience level. If you are newly diagnosed and not sure where to start, looking for a quick list of allergy-friendly restaurants for spring break or preparing for major milestones like how to handle kissing (eek) and colleges, your search is over. Spokin will keep you in the know, #wegotthis.

Less time searching means more time to get on with the fun parts of life. If we can take work off your overflowing plate, then we have done our job.
